Breathing is the MOST important physiological process our bodies undertake. Without breath brain damage begins to occur after 4 minutes and death after 6 minutes. Luckily for us, breathing is a process we do not need to think about in order for it to occur. We are able to carry out our day, breathing naturally and most of us are completely unaware of this process. We also become unaware of how our breathing patterns changes throughout the day and how different situations and different emotions greatly influence how we breathe.

Anxiety / Fight or Flight Breathing

When something occurs in our environment that causes anxiety our breathing quickly changes. Our breathing becomes more rapid and shallow. Our bodies naturally prepare to fight or flight and send more oxygen to our muscles. We also become more alert and aware of our environment, ready to take on the challenge that our bodies perceive.

Fatigue / Depression / Boredom Breathing

When we are tired, depressed or bored we tend to breathe very slow and shallow. Our bodies are relaxed and do not perceive the need for much oxygen. Usually, our posture is also very relaxed and our bodies are in a poor position for breathing. We may be slumped forward with rounded shoulders and head down.

Excitement / Enthusiasm Breathing

When we are excited about something our breathing begins to deepen. You begin taking quick, deep breaths as you anticipate the situation that is about to occur. Your posture improves as your body prepares for activity. Deep breathing brings more oxygen into your blood and cells, including the cells in your brain which allows you to be more focused and alert.

Calm / Relaxed / Sleep Breathing

When we are relaxed or sleeping our breathing is very slow and deep. Our bodies are using oxygen to repair and detoxify our cells. By breathing deeply and slowly we are able to obtain an abundance of oxygen which allows us to remain comfortable and relaxed.

Take Control!

As you can see, our emotions and situations affect how you breathe. Becoming aware of this brings you great power. The opposite also applies. You are able to change how you are feeling in an instant by changing your breathing pattern! The next time you are feeling anxious or angry try taking some deep slow breaths and see how your body and emotions begin to relax. The next time you are feeling tired or depressed, try taking some quick deep breaths and see how your energy level rises. You have the ability to determine how you are feeling, take control of it and change your life.
