I just got back from a week away. And if I’m being honest with you, the workout clothes I packed never left the suitcase.
If you are struggling with getting back into your fitness routine after vacation, you are not alone. There was a lot of sitting on the beach, a lot of meals I wouldn’t normally eat, and a few too many drinks. Every single day, I told myself “tomorrow I’ll get a workout in,” but tomorrow never came.
Sound familiar?
The Story We Tell Ourselves
Here’s what happens the day you get home. You unpack your suitcase, you look at your calendar, and that little voice starts up: Well, I guess I’m starting over.
One week off and suddenly it feels like months of progress just… vanished. Like you’re back at square one. Like the version of you that was consistent, that showed up, that had momentum, is gone.
I want to gently push back on that story, because it’s not true. And I know it’s not true, not just because I coach people through this every single week, but because I live it too. I teach fifteen classes a week. I coach clients who are counting on me to practice what I preach. And even I came home from one week away with that same nagging voice telling me I’d blown it.
Here’s the thing though: a week of rest, relaxation, and indulgence didn’t erase your strength. It didn’t erase your habits. It didn’t erase the version of you that shows up. You just paused it for a minute.
You’re Not Starting Over. You’re Picking the Thread Back Up.
Starting over implies you’re back at zero. That’s not what happened. What actually happened is smaller than the story in your head: your body had a week of different inputs, and your routine had a week off. That’s it. Your consistency muscle, the one you built session by session, didn’t disappear. It’s still there, a little dusty, waiting for you to pick it back up.
That reframe matters, because how you talk to yourself in this moment determines whether you actually get back to it, or whether the guilt spiral talks you into waiting until Monday. And then the next Monday. And you know how that story usually ends.
What Actually Helps When Getting Back Into Your Fitness Routine After Vacation
If you’re standing where I was standing this week, here’s what I’d tell you (and what I’m telling myself):
Scale the first session down on purpose. This isn’t a failure, it’s a strategy. Your first workout back doesn’t need to be your hardest one. Show up, move, and let that be enough.
Pick one thing to show up for, not the whole plan. Don’t try to rebuild your entire routine in one day. One walk. One strength session. One class. That’s the whole goal for day one.
Expect it to feel harder than it “should.” Your body needs a session or two to remember the rhythm. That’s normal, not a red flag, and it doesn’t mean you lost your fitness. It means you’re human.
Give yourself a few days before you judge anything. One tough workout isn’t proof of anything except that you showed up. Momentum builds over days, not in a single session.
This Is What “Real Life” Fitness Actually Looks Like
Vacations happen. Life happens. That’s not a flaw in your plan, that’s the plan working exactly the way it’s supposed to, in a life that actually includes rest, travel, and joy. The goal was never to be perfect. The goal was to build something that fits your real life closely enough that you can step away from it and step right back in.
So if you just got back from a trip, or you’re staring down a week where your routine got derailed for any reason at all: you didn’t ruin anything. You went and lived your life. Now you get to pick the thread back up, one small session at a time.
That’s not starting over. That’s just what showing up for yourself, again and again, actually looks like.
